Meet Rhea (name changed for privacy)

Rhea is 8-years-old.  She loves to read so much that her parent says “she is the child that sleeps with books under her pillow and stacked precariously on her nightstand. Our local library director is fast running out of ideas as to what she can read!”  She’s also 2e – which makes living as gifted even more complex.  Like many gifted kids, she’s a deep thinker.  I happen to love her response to #10 – it’s so honest and thoughtful!

 

1.  What is your passion or your current interest?

My current interest is science and reading.

 

2.  What is the one thing you wish you could tell the world about being gifted?

I get to be homeschooled.

 

3.  What is your greatest strength, and your most difficult weakness as a gifted kid?

Reading is my greatest strength. My weakness is writing.

 

4.  Are you homeschooled, in a gifted program, or mainstream school?  Which one would you prefer if you were offered the choice?

I am homeschooled. I would definitely pick homeschooling.

 

5.  Do you  want to hide being gifted or celebrate it?

I’d like to hide it. I don’t want other kids to think I’m weird.

 

6. Do you have a mentor?  And if so, has that helped you grow and learn as a person?

Yes, my mom. She has helped me grow and learn as a person.

 

7. What’s the one thing you want to accomplish before you become an adult?

I don’t really know.

 

8. If you were able to instantly change the word “Gifted” to something different, what would you pick? Why?

I would like to change it to smart because I am smart.

 

9. What do you want us to know about you?

I get frustrated easily, usually when I am writing and/or typing.

 

10. If you were given the chance to be on the first colony ship off earth, would you go?  Why?

I would not go on the first ship because it could be too dangerous and explode. I would, however, go afterward (once it’s safe). I would like to help colonize Mars as a doctor.

 

11.  Are all kids gifted?

No.

 

12. Tell us what it feels like to be you.

I like to spend time thinking if I’m even real. I also think about the biggest problems on Earth like climate change.
